一謂異熟識，即第八識，名有多義：一、變異而熟。要因變異之時，果方熟故。此義通餘。種生果時，皆變異故。二、異時而熟。與因異時，果方熟故。今者大乘約造之時，非約種、體，許同世故。三、異類而熟。與因異性，果酬因故。然初二解無別論文，今依論文，但取後解。若異屬因，即異之熟。若異屬果，異即是熟。異熟即識熟，屬現行。異熟之識熟屬種子，故餘能變不得此名。二謂思量識，即第七識。「思」謂思慮，「量」謂量度，思量第八，度為我故。又恒、審思量，餘識無故。餘之二識不名思量，至下當悉。思量即識，准前釋也。

First is the maturation consciousness (vipākavijñāna), which is the eighth consciousness. Its name has many senses: First, maturing through change (pariṇāma). It must be at the time of change that the fruit finally matures. This sense is common to the others as well, for when seeds produce fruits, all do so through change. Second, maturing at a different time. It is at a time different from the cause that the fruit finally matures. Here in the Mahāyāna, this is stated with respect to the time of creation, not with respect to the substance of seeds, since [seeds and fruits] are accepted as belonging to the same lifetime. Third, maturing as a different class. Its nature differs from that of the cause, since the fruit repays the cause. However, for the first two interpretations there are no distinct treatise passages; relying on the text of the treatise now, only the latter interpretation is taken. If "difference" pertains to the cause, it is the maturation of the different (tatpuruṣa). If "difference" pertains to the fruit, difference is itself maturation (karmadhāraya). "Maturation is consciousness" means maturation pertains to active manifestations. "Consciousness of maturation" means maturation pertains to seeds; hence the remaining transforming consciousnesses do not receive this name. Second is the cogitating consciousness (manas), which is the seventh consciousness. "Cogitation" (manana) means deliberating and calculating: cogitating on the eighth, it calculates it to be the self. Furthermore, it cogitates constantly and scrutinizingly, which the other consciousnesses do not do. The remaining two consciousnesses are not called cogitation, as will be fully explained below. "Cogitation is consciousness" is construed according to the preceding explanation.
