The word "only" (mātra) in the verse expresses two meanings: First, the meaning of distinction: excluding false clinging and revealing that there is only consciousness, with no objects outside the mind. Second, the meaning of determination: departing from numbers of addition and subtraction. In brief, there are definitely only these three; in detail, there are definitely eight kinds of consciousness. One group of bodhisattvas states that consciousness is only one; various Hīnayāna practitioners cling to citta, manas, and vijñāna as having one meaning under different terms. Furthermore, they cling to consciousness as being only six, which is a subtracted number. The Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra states: "The eight or nine manifold consciousnesses are like the waves on water." Stating that there are nine consciousnesses is an added number. It is revealed that dependent consciousnesses are in brief of three kinds, and in detail there are only eight. Free from addition and subtraction, he therefore says "only". In the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra, the nature of consciousness is also mentioned, or the eighth is distinguished into defiled and pure, hence it speaks of nine consciousnesses; it is not that the substances of dependent consciousness are nine, nor that there are nine consciousnesses of distinct substances and classes.
