The Commentary states: This explains the meaning of 'transformation'. In this school, there are two overall explanations; this is the first explanation. Dharmapāla and others say: The substance of the various consciousnesses, which is the self-verifying division (svasaṃvittibhāga), arises by turning into the resemblance of the two divisions: the objective (nimittabhāga) and subjective (darśanabhāga). This says that the substance of consciousness belongs to the dependent nature; its turning into the resemblance of the objective and subjective divisions is not non-existent, and also belongs to the dependent nature. Based on these two divisions, grasping them as real grāhya and grāhaka is spoken of by the noble ones as non-existent; it is not that these two divisions do not exist in the dependent nature. The treatises state: There are only two, because they belong to the dependent nature. This excludes the true wisdom cognizing tathatā, because it has no objective division. Were it not so, how could it be called the knowledge of others' minds (paracittajñāna)? For subsequent wisdom and so forth do not grasp externally. The extensive explanation of these two will be given below at the end of fascicles seven and ten, as well as in the Commentary on the Viṃśikā.
