Those who accept that the objective and subjective divisions have two real natures say that the seeds of the objective and subjective are either identical or different. If they share the same seed, then the single substance of consciousness turns into a resemblance of the two divisions, arising as characteristic and function, like one snail transforming and growing two horns. This says that the reflected objective and subjective divisions have no separate nature apart from the substance, because they are functions of consciousness. If it is said that the objective and subjective each have distinct seeds: the subjective is the substance itself, divided according to meaning and function, so apart from the substance of consciousness there is no other seed; that is, the single substance of consciousness turns into a resemblance of the subjective division, arising as a distinct function. With consciousness as their support, the seeds of the objective division transform and arise resembling the object; because their functions are distinct and their natures are mutually different, the objective division having a distinct seed is superior in reason. Therefore it says, 'The substance of consciousness turns into a resemblance of the two divisions.' This dependent nature is non-existent yet appears to exist; in reality it is not the two divisions, but because it resembles the imagined two divisions of grāhya and grāhaka, the designation 'resemblance' is established. If the objective division has a distinct seed, why is it called the transformation of consciousness? Because it is not separate from consciousness. It is only when consciousness transforms that the objective division arises, just like the secondary form produced by the great elements. Because the objective realm arises due to the discriminating mind, and it is not that the discriminating mind arises only due to the realm, it is not 'realm-only', but is said to be 'consciousness-only'. This reveals that which transforms.
