The cause of designating and cognising distinctions such as not being one [substance] or being a single substance is named "distinctness." When two things that previously did not touch now come to touch, it is named "conjunction." The meaning here is that only the initial conjunction is named "conjunction." This is divided into three kinds: (1) produced by the action of one: when striking a drum with a hand, the hand has movement, and the conjunction produced thereby—action being movement; (2) produced by the action of both: when two hands come together, because both have movement; (3) produced by conjunction: as when a sprout and so forth grows, having no movement, when it conjoins with substances such as ether, the conjunction produced thereby. When two things that previously touched now no longer touch, it is named "disjunction." This also has three kinds: the first two are the reverse of conjunction, as can be understood from the above; the third is produced by disjunction: when an previously produced substantial effect is broken apart because other conditions arrive, separating the effect substance, its disjunction from ether and so forth—the disjunction produced thereby is named "produced by disjunction."
