Fifth, within permanent and impermanent, the distinction between producing results and not producing results: Because Vijñaptimātra 'only' challenges the permanent producing results: although there are six categories that are definitively permanent, three that are generally both permanent and impermanent, and one that is exclusively impermanent. Among substances, the four kinds of parent atoms of earth, water, fire, and wind are permanent and capable of producing results; capacity is permanent and also capable of producing results, because it is definitively required when producing results; the other five categories entirely, and the five substances of empty space, time, direction, self, and mind, though permanent, cannot produce results. The treatise itself genuinely states: in the category of quality, following the statement under capacity that there are ten required factors for obtaining results which are generally permanent, qualities are also capable of producing results accordingly. Although action produces results, its substance is impermanent, so it is not what is referred to here. Although non-existence also has permanent aspects, it cannot produce results, because it is not fundamental.
