The Commentary states: This reveals the reason why realizing emptiness generates understanding. Below is the second part, revealing their severance. The word 'heavy' regarding 'obstacles' is a term of reproach: because the affliction obstacle (kleśāvaraṇa) obstructs great nirvāṇa and causes one to wander in saṃsāra, and because the cognitive obstacle (jñeyāvaraṇa) obstructs great bodhi and prevents one from awakening to great enlightenment. First, because they are like a diamond, difficult to sever; second, because carrying them makes it difficult to cross the stream of saṃsāra; third, because they oppress and drown sentient beings in the four modes of birth; fourth, because they make sentient beings fall and sink into the three realms. These four meanings above reproach the faults, and so they are called 'heavy', which is explained as applying to both obstacles. Fifth, alternatively, within the two obstacles, the two graspings at self and phenomena are the root of the obstacles and generate other classes of obstacles; merely these two graspings are called 'heavy obstacles', because the other secondary obstacles branching from the grasping at self and phenomena are all light. This explanation precisely reveals what is severed by the two emptinesses. The previous four take all severing of the two obstacles together, in that their root sinking down is called 'heavy'. 'Obstacle' (āvaraṇa) means covering and hindering: covering the cognitive object so that wisdom does not arise, and hindering great nirvāṇa so that it is not clearly realized; hence it is called 'obstacle'. The essence and meaning of the two obstacles are explained below in Fascicle Nine, the seventh fascicle of the Buddhabhūmi-śāstra, the separate essays, and elsewhere.
