The Commentary states: This directly explains the reason for comprehending emptiness: it discloses this text for non-Buddhists and the like, and expounds this meaning for Buddhists and the like, so that they may understand consciousness-only as it truly is, and not give rise to wrong cognition that erroneously clings to self and phenomena; or, it demonstrates the wrong cognitions of self and phenomena of Buddhists and non-Buddhists so that they attain correct knowing, hence it is called 'indicating'. For those entirely unable to know the principle of consciousness-only, opening their minds to know it is called 'revealing'. Cognition that conforms to the correct principle is called knowing as it truly is; this is explained in terms of the Hinayana and non-Buddhists. Within the Mahāyāna, for the masters of the view of emptiness, consciousness-only is also called 'erroneous', reflecting and mutually revealing each other.
