The Saṃmatīyas and the Dārṣṭāntikas establish three unconditioned phenomena, which have no real substance. The Vibhajyavādins state that among the three cessations they establish impermanence-cessation, which is also unconditioned. The Sarvāstivāda school also establishes three kinds, but holds them to be real existents. As for space, they explain it either as solely one or as plural. However, in the Mahāyāna, this treatise and the Treatise on the Hundred Dharmas speak of only six. Yogācārabhūmi fascicle fifty-three speaks of two, namely space and non-deliberation. The Pañcaskandhaka-śāstra speaks of four, not mentioning the two such as unshakeability, because they are cessation through deliberation. Furthermore, treatises such as the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, Abhidharma-samuccaya, and Prakaraṇāryavācā speak of eight kinds, dividing tathatā into three among these six, because of differences in perspective regarding expression and principle.
