Transformation is of two kinds: The first is generative transformation, which is the meaning of modification, as explained just above. 'Transformation' refers to the maturation differences in cause and effect; the vāsanā of the two causes of homogeneous outflow and maturation is called the 'transforming cause' (hetu-pariṇāma); the eight consciousnesses that are generated and manifest various marks are the 'transforming effect' (phala-pariṇāma); hence the generating cause is called the transforming factor. The second is cognitive transformation, which is the meaning of manifesting as an object, and is the transforming effect. The eighth consciousness transforms exclusively into seeds, the body endowed with sense faculties, and so forth; the evolving consciousnesses such as the eye [consciousness] transform into matter and so forth. Here it merely speaks of cognizing as being called transformation; when the treatise discusses transformation below, it should be distinguished accordingly.
