6.60

述曰：今破不然。心等取境，作意功力警心、心所令取所緣，如前已說。聖教但言作意能生識，不言欲能生心，故知作意令心等取境，何待於欲？

The Commentary states: Now refuting that it is incorrect. The mind and so forth grasping the sphere is the functional power of attention alerting the mind and mental factors to grasp the cognitive object, as already explained above. The sacred teachings only state that attention can generate consciousness; they do not say that desire can generate mind. Therefore we know that attention causes the mind and so forth to grasp the sphere; what need is there to rely on desire?
