The mind and so forth grasping the sphere is the functional power of attention alerting the mind and mental factors to grasp the cognitive object, as already explained above. The sacred teachings only state that attention can generate consciousness; they do not say that desire can generate mind. Therefore we know that attention causes the mind and so forth to grasp the sphere; what need is there to rely on desire?
