The Commentary states: This is the second position. Having first cultivated it in the kāmadhātu, in the rūpadhātu, except for the place where the fruit is experienced, in all the other lower grounds or all other places, it can be re-induced to manifest. Yogācārabhūmi fascicle 56 states: 'first generated here' means first generating this concentration; 'later in the rūpadhātu' means later generating this concentration; 'one will experience that fruit in the fourth dhyāna' specifies the place where the fruit is experienced. Thus, regarding 'later experienced in the rūpadhātu', the two masters quote it differently: the former master applies it to the fruit, whereas the latter master applies it to the concentration; hence the two dispute. However, since it extends to retribution in later [lives], it is superior that it manifests again in the rūpadhātu. The former master says: Having retrogressed in the present life in the kāmadhātu, regaining it in a subsequent life without retrogressing from the prior concentration is indeed called retribution in a later [life], so why bother being born there? Therefore, the strengths of both positions are equal. The school holding that it is generated later [states that] it is not in that heavenly place because it has reached culmination; in the fourth dhyāna, there are three places where it may or may not be generated. Now, this text says 'except for the asaṃjñi-sattva heaven', not precluding other places, and so it can be generated. Although one knows that abandoning defilement is the same for all grounds, simply due to perfuming and cultivation one is born into the various higher places distinctly and differently; hence in the lower three places one also attains this concentration. Another explanation: In the lower places, one cannot [generate it], because abandoning defilement is identical: if one generates lower defilement, one definitely will not be born into the fourth dhyāna; if one is free from lower defilement, one attains that concentration. Therefore, in the lower heavenly places there is no possibility of attaining the concentration, because when one retrogresses from this concentration, one inevitably generates lower defilement. Otherwise, how could it be called 'retrogression'?
