Question: If so, why does fascicle 9 of the Great Treatise state: the six consciousnesses as seeds perfumed and originated by the three formations, and the six consciousnesses at the time of fruit produced by the seeds, are called the member of consciousness; and in various places it is also said that formations perfume consciousness, that consciousness and name-and-form can serve mutually as conditions, and that consciousness enters the mother's womb—meanings that do not apply when it is in the state of seeds? The Daśabhūmika-śāstra states: just as ignorance has a time of seed and a time of fruit, it is likewise up to birth and old age and death. Answer: The subsequent text of this treatise states: these five seeds have no sequence at the time of cause; they are spoken of as having a sequence in terms of the stages of fruits to be born; or, within the present, they belong to past lives, and because the member of consciousness is spoken of at the stage of this birth and old age and death, there is active consciousness, but in reality it is solely seeds. If it were not so, it would contradict what is said in fascicle 56. There, it states that the five seeds are suffering of the womb. Furthermore, among the induced members in this treatise, it states that the five, such as consciousness, are seeds; since consciousness is like this, the statements that name-and-form enters the mother's womb, and even that feeling is of two kinds—namely, feeling of sense-objects serving as the condition for craving, etc.—are all understood on this basis. The essences of these five are all solely seeds; therefore, speaking in terms of the stage of impending birth and the stage of birth and old age and death, they are said to have active manifestations, but in reality they have none; this is subsumed exclusively under the non-obscured indeterminate nature.
