The Commentary states: Below is the tenth section, explanations through various categories. Within this, there are seventeen categorical explanations in all. First, the category of designations and real entities: nine are real entities and three are designations. The designations are existence, birth, and aging-and-death. This is because the formations, and the five links of consciousness, etc., which have already been moistened by craving and grasping, are combined and collectively transformed to be named 'existence.' Among the moistened six, when the five kinds of consciousness, etc., arise into actuality—that is, within the four characteristics, manifesting the distinct phases of the three characteristics of arising, alteration, and cessation—they are named 'birth' and 'aging-and-death.' Their substance is none other than consciousness, etc.; therefore, the three of existence, birth, and aging-and-death are designations. Predominant craving has a different substance named 'grasping,' and there are further remaining defilements that serve as the substance of the grasping link; therefore, it is not a designation. Fascicle 10 [of the Yogācārabhūmi] only says nine are real and three are designations; fascicle 56 is the same as this, both stating that existence, birth, etc., are designations.
