The Commentary states: Tenth is the section on the antidote and what is remedied. The formation link of a higher stage can suppress a lower stage. What is the formation link of a higher [stage]? It refers to the six kinds of mental aspects, such as coarseness and suffering, which apply to the form and formless [realms], because there are those who generate that formation link out of longing for rebirth in a higher stage. That is to say, viewing the twelve links of the lower realm as coarse, painful, and obstructive, and viewing all things in the higher realm as tranquil, excellent, and detached—this is the formation link of the higher stage. It is triggered by the lower ignorance; hence it is said that the higher formation link severs all that is lower, because it takes all that is lower as its cognitive object. Although it takes all that is higher as its object, the cognitive aspect that can perceive it is only the formation link; therefore it is said that relying on higher formation, one severs the links of the lower realm. Question: All cittas and caittas possess mental aspects (ākāra); why are the six aspects alone called "mental aspects"? Answer: A mental aspect refers to the darśanabhāga, as previously explained, which no citta or caitta lacks. However, here the substance of the six aspects is the mental factor of wisdom; because its function of discernment is predominant, it is specifically called a "mental aspect," just like the sixteen aspects [of the Four Noble Truths]; hence there is no fault. These six mental aspects are as explained in the Yogācārabhūmi and the Separate Notes. The tenth fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states: "Can one abandon a link by relying on a link? Answer: Yes. That is, by relying on a link of a higher stage, one abandons a link of a lower stage; this is only partial, not complete, and only temporary, not ultimate." It is not that a partial fraction of each of the twelve links is capable of this, but only the formation link alone is capable of this; hence it says "a single part." Higher ignorance, craving, and grasping are of a defiled nature; existence is of the nature of karmic action moisturized [by defilement], not of the nature of present action; consciousness and so forth, birth and so forth, are karmic retribution and indeterminate; therefore they are not paths of antidotes. Since this is so, only formation is said to be able to abandon a link. Because it is sāsrava, it is only temporary; because it is not anāsrava, it is not ultimate.
