Why revere only the two masters, root and commenting? The Tathāgata is the creator, because he is the support of the treatise; the disciple is the expounder, because he produced this treatise. In the Yogācāra-śāstra, [fascicle] sixty-four states: If one wishes to compose a treatise, first pay homage to the two masters. Out of reverence for the Dharma, pay homage to the root master of the treatise; out of reverence for the meaning, pay homage to the master who revealed and expounded it. Sthiramati's preface at the beginning of the Samuccaya states: Because of being that upon which this treatise relies, and that which was able to produce it. The Buddha, the Bhagavān, is the support of all dharmas, because he is the locus of support for the arising of all teachings. The noble disciples of the Buddha, following and learning in accordance with the Dharma, unerringly rely upon it to compose the treatise.
