The Commentary states: This explains the transformation of consciousness. When the eight consciousnesses arise, by the power of internal causes and conditions such as seeds, the eighth consciousness transforms to resemble the five faculties and the five dust-objects. The five consciousnesses such as the visual rely on the faculties transformed by it and take as intentional objects the fundamental dust-objects transformed by it; although they do not directly grasp them, they necessarily depend on them to arise. In reality, upon the material dust-objects of the fundamental consciousness, they transform and appear as images of the five dust-objects, taking those five faculties as their support and taking both that and this form of the five dust-objects as their intentional objects. If the five consciousnesses did not depend on what is transformed by the eighth consciousness, they would have no intentional object, because within intentional objects there are immediate and remote ones. The above is the general first part, setting forth the correct teaching.
