The Commentary states: From here downward is the second part, specifically refuting the five faculties. The five dust-objects such as visible form are seen in common by the world and attained through direct perception (pratyakṣa); the five faculties such as the eye are not attained through direct perception. Although the eighth consciousness cognizing them and the Tathāgata and others cognizing them is attained through direct perception, this is not commonly believed by the world; in other ordinary, distracted states of mind they are not attained through direct perception. Since they merely have the function of generating consciousness, they are known to exist through inference; they are not attained through the direct perception of other minds or the ordinary six consciousnesses, with the sole exception of the Tathāgata. In the Hīnayāna doctrine, the Tathāgata also attains them by direct perception, but because this is not commonly accepted by the world, it is not used as proof.
