The Commentary states: This is the third part, citing the doctrine of the original Sarvāstivāda Vaibhāṣika masters. As with the Sautrāntika masters, that which is formed by the combination of atoms is nominal, and cannot serve as a condition to produce the five consciousnesses. Now [for the Vaibhāṣika], when combined, each atom has a coarse combined aspect and each can serve as a condition to produce the five consciousnesses, because having a real entity, it can serve as a condition. However, the five consciousnesses do not apprehend the distinct aspects of atoms, hence they are rejected.
