The Commentary states: Even if they defend by saying that upon the individual atoms there is a combined aspect that serves as the object of the five consciousnesses—the combined aspect being a resembling single aspect, this aspect being an activity greater than the original atoms, and activity not being separate from the entity, and since the entity really exists, it constitutes an ālambana-pratyaya; or there is no objection to this being their original doctrine—we now also reject it. The syllogism is: When atoms are combined, they should have no distinct combined aspect (thesis); because their entity is identical to the original atoms (reason); like when they are not combined (example). The meaning here is: It is not that upon the atoms there is a distinct combined aspect, because when uncombined this aspect does not exist; hence this too is not an object.
