The Commentary states: Below there are five objections: First, the objection that the two states are without difference. When atoms aggregate and mutually support one another, and when they are not aggregated and do not mutually support one another, their entity is one; how could mutual support enable them to become large and produce the five consciousnesses? Setting up the syllogism: Your mutually supporting atoms should not serve as objects for the five consciousnesses (thesis); because they are the aspect of atoms (reason); like when they are not mutually supporting and aggregated (example). The verse of the Ālambanaparīkṣā says: 'The aggregated, like solid and so forth, / Granted that with respect to visual and other consciousnesses / It is a condition, is not an object, / Because the aspect of atoms is accepted.'
