The Commentary states: This is the second [part], discarding and establishing. 'Produced by causal conditions' means: produced by prior karma and real nominal seeds, that is, they must have efficacy; only a spontaneous mind, not one produced through mental application, then that mind arises; that is, the five consciousnesses and the eighth consciousness, in accordance with the sovereign conditioning of their vipāka cause and having nominal seeds as their cause, transform the object. The five mental factors associated with the eighth lack superior efficacy; even if they arise spontaneously, their objects have no real utility. Phenomena transformed by causal conditions must have real substance, because they are not arbitrarily imputed and are not without function.
