The Commentary states: Because only the neutral receives perfuming, the Tathāgata's eighth pure anāsrava consciousness carries these old seeds only as perfumed during the causal stage, and does not newly receive perfuming. Being exclusively wholesome, it conflicts with the wholesome and so on, just like aloeswood; hence this is not in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha. It is distinguished from being identical with the Buddha-stage, and is described as unperfumed. What fault would there be in its being perfumed? Because it would oppose and reject dharmas, because there would be increase and decrease, because the wholesome is consummate, and because there would be superior and inferior; hence it cannot receive perfuming. If it were the perfumed merely through having a neutral nature and staying firm, then the five mental factors such as ideation concomitant with the fundamental consciousness, as well as space and the like, should also be the perfumed.
