The Commentary states: Superior function is twofold: first, the vigorous function of being capable of cognition, which excludes the various forms [by restricting them] to perfuming as the object-aspect (nimittabhāga), not perfuming as the capable cognizer; second, an intense superior function, meaning not arising spontaneously, which excludes other classes of heterogeneous ripening minds and so forth, which have the function of cognitive reflection but lack intense function, perfuming as the object-aspect and not perfuming as the capable cognizer. From this, form and so forth have intense function but lack cognitive function; heterogeneous ripening minds and so forth have cognitive function but lack intense function; and non-associated dharmas lack both functions; none of these are capable of perfuming. Only superior vigorous function can effect perfuming, just as a strong and vigorous person can effect results. Therefore, the five mental factors and so forth concurrent with the eighth [consciousness] are likewise not capable of perfuming. If they serve as conditions for another, there is no fault at all; the general statement here is intended in this way.
