The Commentary states: The seventh, manas, when reaching the undefiled stage, also has increase and decrease; the undefiled in the causal stage is by analogy completely the same, because it can produce superior, intermediate, and inferior seeds. One must be like one of sharp faculties who can sever [defilements] and also rapidly attain the wholesome fruit; with others it is not so; or being capable of hardness or capable of softness, one is able to effect the fruit, not other neutral things and equanimous things.
