The Commentary states: The fourth part differentiates the realms. Material nutriment functions in the lower realm because it strongly accords with desire. Contact and volition operate throughout all three realms: those conjoined with the sixth [consciousness] may be present or absent according to the consciousness; those conjoined with the eighth are constantly present according to the consciousness. Thus they operate based on consciousness, being present or absent according to the consciousness. This shows that the nutriment of consciousness also extends to all three realms; hence the substance of the four nutriments neither decreases nor increases, as stated in fascicle sixty-six of the Yogācārabhūmi, the Viniścayasaṃgrahaṇī, and the fifth fascicle of the Mauly-bhūmi. What has been presented above cites the secondary vehicle's tenets within the Mahāyāna to set forth provisionally the substance of nutriment.
