The Commentary states: If they rescue their position by saying: because karma and fruit of later retribution ripen at the present time, other things serve as seeds, such as matter holding seeds; or other things serve as their cause, such that the past and future periods exist—'cause' refers to the reason, taking the past and future periods as the reason. Now we reject this entirely: because it was already refuted earlier, for both schools as before.
