Now, in explaining 'support' (āśraya), although these four criteria are complete, if we infer based on the principle, there are a few considerations: consciousnesses belonging to one's own continuum serve as supports; a later [moment] does not serve as a support for an earlier one, nor an earlier for a later, nor does another [continuum] serve as a support for oneself. Therefore, in the meaning of support here, another for oneself is not determined, and earlier and later in relation to one another are subsumed under later supports, and are not this support. [One might object:] All five consciousnesses should take the body faculty as their support, as it lacks none [of the criteria]. This too is not so; there are briefly two explanations, as stated in the Shujao. What are their substances? They are the internal six bases (āyatana), namely the five faculties and the mental faculty (manendriya).
