The Commentary states: The treatise master objects: Since at the time of the eye-consciousness there is no absence of the mano-vijñāna, and after the five vijñānas cease the mano-vijñāna subsequently arises, if so, this is the continuous arising of the mind; how could one say it is the continuity of the five vijñānas? If, as at the time of the eye-consciousness there were no mano-vijñāna, and at the time of the mano-vijñāna there were no five vijñānas, because they would arise alternately, they could mutually continue each other. Since this is not the case, it is not that "two vijñānas arise in mutual succession" that is termed continuity. This is the second objection: using principle to establish the teaching.
