The Commentary states: Below this is the second part, posing an objection regarding the sixth, the mano-vijñāna, to make it take the two vijñānas, the seventh and eighth, as its basis. In the five mindless states, the sixth vijñāna is interrupted; whether there is a seventh in this cessation absorption and so forth is as commonly explained. In these five states, only the two vijñānas, the seventh and eighth, are continuous. When later emerging from the mindless state, the seventh and eighth vijñānas should serve as the basis for the sixth, the mano-vijñāna; because that [sixth] was previously interrupted, while these are constantly continuous. Just as when in meditation the ear hears sound and so forth, although the mind does not cognize the same object, it nevertheless serves as the basis for the ear-consciousness, because the mind previously existed, while this ear[-consciousness] arises intermittently. In the five mindless states, taking the seventh and eighth vijñānas as identical to that meditative mind, and taking this interrupted mind as identical to that ear-consciousness, therefore in principle it must be so.
