The Commentary states: This is the second, an objection using the vijñāna in the causal state. The third fascicle of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says that the vipāka mind relies on the defiled manas. In Asvabhāva's view, the defiled manas is the sixth; in Vasubandhu's view, the defiled manas is perhaps the seventh mind; hence one knows that the eighth also relies on the sixth and seventh. This is said with respect to pṛthagjanas and a portion of śaikṣa bodhisattvas taking birth, as in the fifth fascicle of the Abhidharma-samuccaya: for those who have the power of vows, this requires the assembly of great bodhisattvas on the ten bhūmis, in order to cross over sentient beings, whether through mortal birth or transformational birth, also taking the wholesome minds of the two wisdoms as condition, whereby the eighth is able to arise. This explanation applies generally to the first bhūmi, or is said to be on the eighth bhūmi; the former explanation is superior.
