The Commentary states: This is precisely the verse from the ninth fascicle of that sūtra. The old translation read: "The fundamental consciousness is merely citta, manas can be mindful of the realm of objects, vijñāna can grasp all realms of objects, therefore I speak of mind-only." But that was an erroneous translation; immediately below, the proof is shown. The eighth is indeterminate, etc., meaning citta is constantly an indeterminate dharma; manas grasps marks at the two extremes; grasping present dharmas is vijñāna, which is wholesome or unwholesome. "Manas [grasps] at the two extremes" should say it possesses grasping at self and what belongs to self; the verse was mistranslated, for it does not grasp at annihilationism and eternalism. Thus the "eighth" is citta; the "seventh" is manas, because its nature is reflective deliberation; "the remaining six" are vijñāna, because the six are capable of discerning the characteristics of all objects.
