The Commentary states: Mind and mental factors are definitively governed by the four conditions, as stated in the thirty-eighth fascicle of the Bodhisattvabhūmi among the ten causes: 'Only mind and mental factors are equal-and-immediate conditions.' It is also as stated in the third fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi and elsewhere: 'Four conditions can give rise to consciousness.' The first fascicle of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: 'Because mind and mental factors are definitively governed by the four conditions.' Therefore, material form does not have the equal-and-immediate condition. If they should object again: 'Why does the third fascicle of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha state that the mind of an arhat can only admit of the equal-and-immediate condition? Thus we know that material form also has this condition.'
