The Commentary states: Below is the third: the objection that each should act as a condition. Question: For the eight consciousnesses within their own categories, as the preceding eye-consciousness serves as the basis for the subsequent eye-consciousness, why do sensation and the like not solely serve as the basis for subsequent sensation and the like, while sensation associated with eye-consciousness can serve as the basis for subsequent ideation and the like associated with itself? Why is this not like the position of the famous śramaṇa, where ideation is compared to ideation, sensation to sensation, and so on? It is to resolve this objection.
