The Commentary states: The author of the treatise resolves it, saying: the substance of this faith is limpid and clear, and capable of purifying the mind and so forth; the remaining minds and mental factors are only wholesome through association. These eleven are wholesome by intrinsic nature; because the former are associated with them, their substance is neither wholesome nor unwholesome. Because of being concomitant with faith and the like, the mind and so forth only then become wholesome; hence this pure faith is capable of purifying the mind and so forth, based on a tatpuruṣa compound. Furthermore, although the substances and natures of the ten phenomena such as shame are wholesome, their substance does not have purification as its characteristic; this [faith] has purification as its characteristic, and is therefore called faith. Only faith is that which purifies, while the others are all that which is purified. Because the cittarāja is primary, it merely states "purification of the mind" without mentioning the purification of mental factors; the wording is abbreviated.
