The Commentary states: This explains what has and has not been experienced, whether entity or category; toward things such as nirvāṇa, no mindfulness arises at all, and this applies to the three times. When mindfulness arises cognizing them, it is mostly in the past, but it also recollects the future, because it is conjoined with various objects previously experienced. If one has previously heard the name of nirvāṇa, etc., spoken and gives rise to mindfulness, this is also called giving rise to mindfulness by having previously experienced the category of that object. If one has not heard it at all, and the mind is distracted and lax in cognizing, then no mindfulness arises.
