The Commentary states: Below, the author of the treatise answers according to his own tenet. When the five consciousnesses and the simultaneous mental consciousness obtain [the object] through direct perception, they do not grasp it as external. Direct perception obtains the unique characteristic (svalakṣaṇa), and the essence of the dharma is not external; hence it is not called an external dharma, as there is neither internal nor external, and there is no conceptualization. Explaining in accordance with other tenets: when the five consciousnesses condition an object and obtain it through direct perception, they do not grasp it as external; it is the mind subsequent to the five consciousnesses that falsely gives rise to the conception of an object external to mind, while in reality there is no external object.
