The Commentary states: The former immediate objective condition is present in every apprehending mind; because without the image component that is cogitated and leaned upon internally, all minds and mental factors inevitably cannot function. In Mahāyāna now, if apprehending a non-existent dharma, no mind arises. The remote objective condition may or may not be present for an apprehending dharma, because it is a dharma external to [that specific moment of] mind. Just as when grasping a real self, although there is no archetype, the mind still arises apart from that dharma; the rest is as in the Shunyao.
