The Commentary states: Because the five consciousnesses—eye and the others—are foremost among the eight consciousnesses, in the causal stage they are: first, coarse; second, dull; and third, inferior. Hence, they must rely on an external archetype transformed by either the eighth or the sixth [consciousness] in order to arise; the rest is as [explained in] the Shunyao. At the stage where the basis has been transformed, wherever they may be, this remote objective support is not definitely present. Some say they also take tathatā as an object; others say they cannot, taking only the past, future, and so on as objects. However, now in the Mahāyāna, once the Buddha stage is reached, all [dharmas] are taken as objects, with the sole exception that the seeing division is not the objective support for [another's] image; in the causal stage, the five consciousnesses share the mutual function of the sense faculties, and with the sole exception of their own associated entity, [all else] can also serve as the object-condition.
