The Commentary states: Nor is it that, excluding the generative and traction [causes], the remaining eight causes in their entirety are called the remaining causes. Why is this? Within the four [causes] there are direct causes, so subsuming them completely would be too broad, because auxiliary causes are not direct causes; and within those two causes of generative and traction there are also seeds that are not direct causes, namely karmic seeds and so forth. If only the eight causes were called the remainder, not subsuming [these] would be too narrow, because there are non-direct causes in them that would not be subsumed under the auxiliary. The text of the *Bodhisattvabhūmi* does not exhaust the reasoning; therefore, in this matter, it is all as I explain.
