The Commentary states: If a defiled mind could, like the undefiled, not give rise to grasping, then it should not be called 'false discrimination'; if a non-grasping mind were called 'false discrimination', then the undefiled mind should also be called a 'mind of false discrimination'. Thus, by this principle, it is clarified that all defiled minds are capable of pervasive imagination. Passages in the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra, the Madhyāntavibhāga, and elsewhere all state that the eight consciousnesses are false discrimination.
