The Commentary states: Furthermore, if all defiled minds possessed dharmagrāha, a mind with dharmagrāha would necessarily have efficacy, and thus a mind born of maturation should also be capable of perfuming, because a defiled mind has efficacy and function, like wholesome, unwholesome, and so on. Yet you maintain that the eighth consciousness is also not capable of perfuming because as a mind of maturation it lacks efficacy and function. But no mind with grasping and efficacy is ever seen to lack the capacity to perfume. Thus the eighth consciousness should also be capable of perfuming; otherwise, it would contradict inference (anumāna). If so, why do the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra, the upper fascicle of the Madhyāntavibhāga, and so forth state that the eight consciousnesses in the three realms are all false discrimination? Fascicle sixteen of the Prakaraṇāryavācā also states the same.
