Regarding 'these two clingings to self are severed at the initial path of seeing': as explained in the Commentary, this may be known. In the three-mind path of seeing, regarding the two discriminative clingings, which is severed first and which later? Both apply to both, for both arise through the power of evil friends and erroneous contemplation. One says: what arises through the power of false teachings is severed later, while what arises through erroneous contemplation is severed first, because being coarse, it is easily severed. The second explanation is the reverse: what arises through the power of false teachings is severed first. Just as when previously resuming wholesome roots its strength is weak, so what arises through erroneous contemplation is severed later; just as when resuming wholesome roots at the time of death in hell, the resuming force is firm. The third explanation: the conception identical to the aggregates and so forth is severed later because it is subtle, since the aggregates and the self are similar; the conception separate from the aggregates is severed first because it is coarse and vehement. The fourth explanation: it is not fixed. In each and every one of the nine stages there are coarse and subtle; coarse ones are eliminated first, subtle ones are severed later. Because at one time the activities have coarse and subtle, severance has earlier and later; the various afflictions flowing from this are described as severed earlier or later according to their grade.
