At that time, there was a layman named Xuanjian, who recognized when the phoenix and fowl fold their wings and understood when the qilin and dragon conceal their traces. He continually exhausted his resources to provide offerings, steadfast in deep sincerity and resolution, depleting his wealth year after year. The Bodhisattva instructed and guided him in many ways, and, presenting him with this commentary in return, tested him saying: “After I pass into extinction, whenever anyone comes to read this, take one ounce of gold; if you happen to encounter someone of divine brilliance, you may transmit and circulate it.” The final term having approached, his profound guidance suddenly came to an end. The Bodhisattva's renown shook this continent [of Jambudvīpa], and the fame of his treatise and commentary surpassed that other land. Among sentient beings, who did not cherish reverence? Hearing it at dawn and dying at dusk, how could they begrudge gold and jade? People rushed to the sage as to a market; offerings piled up like mountains. The five regions of India craned their necks in longing, but it had not yet circulated freely.
