The Great Master [Xuanzang] had heavenly-endowed intelligence and insight, relying on travels and study to broaden his knowledge; there was no sacred trace he did not venerate, no holy teaching he did not unfold and chant. Hearing of this wondrous doctrine, he earnestly and reverently sought it out. Remembering the late sage's bequeathed words, the layman knew it surely belonged to this present worthy, and thereupon offered this draft manuscript, along with the Pañcaskandhaka and its commentary. The Great Master treasured it as though beholding the sacred countenance; whenever he held it in his palm, it was no different from true speech. Since the jade documents drifted westward and the white horse galloped eastward, although subtle teachings had been widely expounded, he treasured this as an esoteric secret. When resting in a separate lodge, sheltered from the scorching heat, he refreshed his ears and eyes with profound contemplation, cleansing his mind to unravel its marvels, and then remarked: “Only now is my mind truly gratified!” As Xuan-ni [Confucius] said: “I have a precious jade stored in a case; who is the good merchant? I shall sell it!”
