真異熟具三義：一、業果；二、不斷；三、遍三界。第七具後二義，非初；第六報心具初、後義，非中；非報心具後一義，非初二；五識報心具初，非後二；非報心三義俱無，故唯第八獨得其名。

True vipāka possesses three characteristics: 1. karmic fruit; 2. uninterrupted; 3. pervading the three realms. The seventh possesses the latter two characteristics, but not the first; the retributive mind of the sixth possesses the first and last characteristics, but not the middle; non-retributive minds possess the last characteristic, but not the first two; the retributive minds of the five consciousnesses possess the first, but not the latter two; non-retributive minds lack all three characteristics. Therefore, the eighth consciousness alone uniquely obtains its name.
