1.40

應詰彼言：「如地方所，先無此性，後有此性；或先有此性，後無此性。如是先有聲聞種性，後無是性；乃至先有大乘種性，後無是性。先有不定性，後無是姓耶？若言爾者，順解脫善應空無果。又若爾者，立種性定，不應道理。若不爾者，汝言先住無性，後住有性，如地方所。有種性者先住有性，後住無性，如地方所，不應道理」。

One should cross-examine them, saying: 'Just as a tract of land formerly lacks this nature and later has this nature, or formerly has this nature and later lacks this nature—likewise, would one formerly have the śrāvaka gotra and later lack this nature, or formerly have the Mahāyāna gotra and later lack this nature, or formerly have the indeterminate gotra and later lack this gotra? If you say so, the wholesomeness conducive to liberation would be empty and without fruit. Moreover, if so, establishing gotras as determinate would be unreasonable. If it is not so, your saying that one formerly abides in non-gotra and later abides in gotra like a tract of land, or that one possessing gotra formerly abides in gotra and later abides in non-gotra like a tract of land, is unreasonable.'
