Furthermore, the Nirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'Good sons, such dispute is the domain of the Buddhas, not something known by śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas. If a person gives rise to doubt about this, he can still destroy immeasurable afflictions as vast as Mount Sumeru. If in this matter he gives rise to definitive certainty, it is called clinging; such clinging is not called wholesome.' It also says in fascicle thirty-six: 'Good sons, although I say that all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, sentient beings do not understand the Buddha's words spoken in accordance with his own intention (svābhiprāya) and the like. Good sons, even bodhisattvas in their final rebirth cannot understand such words, how much less the two vehicles and other bodhisattvas!' Furthermore, of the seven persons in the Ganges, the seventh is perpetually submerged. Furthermore, the Chapter on Gotra in the Shanjie jing (Bodhisattva-bhūmi) says: 'Although a person without gotra produces the aspiration [for awakening] and practices with vigorous exertion, in the end he cannot attain unexcelled bodhi.' That sūtra also says: 'A person without gotra is perfected only through the wholesome roots of humans and gods.'
