或總分五：一、略標宗；二、陳識性；三、彰變義；四、釋外徵；五、修成果。宗義為主，故最初陳；雖有識言，未知識性，故次於前，隨宗陳辨；雖知其體，未明變義，故次識體而說變義；雖說義門，妨難未遣，故隨變義，次釋外徵；達義周圓，隨釋難已，故須入位，故分成五，其第三，彰變義。於前分為四科中，第三結釋外難中離出，義意可知也。

Or it is generally divided into five: 1. briefly designating the central theme; 2. presenting the nature of consciousness; 3. demonstrating the meaning of transformation; 4. resolving external inquiries; 5. realizing the result through cultivation. The thesis of the central theme is primary, so it is presented at the very beginning. Although there is the word "consciousness," one does not yet know the nature of consciousness; therefore next after the preceding, one presents and distinguishes it according to the central theme. Although knowing its substance, one has not yet clarified the meaning of transformation; therefore next after the substance of consciousness, one explains the meaning of transformation. Although the doctrinal categories have been explained, objections have not yet been dispelled; therefore following the meaning of transformation, one next resolves external inquiries. Once one has completely mastered the meaning and resolved objections, one must then enter the stages; therefore it is divided into five. The third, "demonstrating the meaning of transformation," is singled out from the third [part], "concluding and resolving external objections," in the previously divided fourfold rubric; its doctrinal intent can be understood.
